International SOS Foundation shares guidance for workforce safety and resilience
The International SOS Foundation has released its latest white paper, Extreme Weather and Natural Disasters - Security Impacts on Domestic and Global Workforces. The report focuses on the growing security risks posed by extreme weather and other natural hazards and provides guidance to help organisations safeguard their people during times of disruption.
Drawing on frontline data and real-world case studies, the new paper highlights how natural hazards act as "threat multipliers," amplifying vulnerabilities and creating new security challenges. It offers recommendations to help keep employees safe, maintain access to essential resources, and support wellbeing during emergencies.
Kai Boschmann, Executive Director of the International SOS Foundation, said: "Organisational resilience to extreme weather and natural hazards is no longer optional, it is an imperative. This guidance document can help organisations turn awareness into action by embedding preparedness for natural hazards into their risk monitoring and core strategy to safeguard their people and operations.
Rick Cudworth, Executive Director at Resilience First, added: "The increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events is not just a climate issue, it is a systemic risk that touches every aspect of society and business. Resilience starts with people, and this paper offers a roadmap for organisations to strengthen workforce resilience and help their teams through uncertainty."
Key areas of the report:
- Keeping people safe: Measures for emergency preparedness and workforce protection.
- Regional insights: Tailored approaches for diverse environments, from heatwaves to flooding.
- Support frameworks: Steps to maintain wellbeing and access to critical resources during crises.
- Real-world examples: How organisations have successfully supported employees during natural disasters.
This report builds on the Foundation's earlier publication, "Extreme Weather - Health Impacts on the Global Workforce," which focuses on health and wellbeing challenges, including heat stress, respiratory illnesses, mental health strain, and operational disruptions. Together, these reports aim to help organisations provide the care and support their people need in an era of escalating risk.
